Encounters of the Spooky Kind (1981)

Sammo Hung stars in this Kung Fu/Comedy/Horror flick. Sammo’s wife is cheating on him, so her lover plots to have Sammo killed. The plot entails having Sammo stay in a crypt overnight while a priest raises a dead body to take care of Sammo. Unbeknownst to the priest, his own friend alerts Sammo because he does not believe the power should be used to perform evil.

This movies is very funny and made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Sammo is excellent in this one. His fights are incredible. If you are a Sammo Hung fan, this is a must see. Since this is equal parts comedy and Kung Fu, you might not enjoy it as much if you don't care for comedies. The DVD cover says it may be one of Sam Raimi's inspirations for the EVIL DEAD movies. I'm not sure why they would put that on the cover if it's just speculation, but it does give you an idea of what type of movie it is.

Hong Kong Legends once again provides a great transfer. The colors are vibrant and the print has been restored beautifully. The black levels look good and the movie looks better than some recent movies I have on DVD. Some have noticed that the HKL version of PLOICE STORY looks a little 'squashed'. There are no signs of this on this transfer. I couldn't find anything bad about the transfer. The anamorphic picture looked great on the 57 inch TV.

The audio starts off a little tinny but it gets better after the title credits. The opening made me think the sub woofer was shut off but it wasn't. It's just very high pitched in the beginning. The stereo soundtrack is fine otherwise. I am glad a full blown 5.1 remix wasn't done. People may like to show off their audio equipment but do it with new movies, not ones that weren't meant to be that way. The soundtrack is mixed well, the dialogue is never drowned out but the music and sound effects. Overall, the audio quality is very good.

This is from HKL so you know there will be extras. Though not as robust as some of their other releases, EOTSK does have trailers, Bey Logan commentary, Sammo Hung interview and restoration featurette. These are nice to have but it's the movie you get the DVD for.

I really recommend EOTSK. For Sammo Hung fans this is a must see. Fans of old-school Kung Fu movies will also enjoy this one. This is a perfect mix of horror, Kung Fu, and comedy. You won't believe this movie is over twenty years old when you see the DVD.
