Jet Li is Fong Sai Yuk, the best Kung Fu guy in town. That is, next to his mother! Sai Yuk enters a tournament to win a bride, the daughter of Tiger Lei. His opponent? Tiger Lei's wife. The two fight it out and eventually wind up fighting on top of the heads of the people in the crowd. Just when Sai Yuk is about to win, he gets a glimpse of his bride to be. The daughter he was supposed to win ran away and her less attractive sister substituted. Sai Yuk throws the fight and goes home. His mother is offended that her son could lose so she poses as a man and defeats Tiger lei's wife. Of course she refuses to marry. Tiger Lei catches up with her and Sai Yuk and forces Sai Yuk to marry his daughter. When Sai Yuk goes to town to visit his father, he finds out that his father is in a secret society that is forming a resistance to the present rule. When his father is exposed, he is marked for execution with Fong Sai Yuk out to save him.

The picture quality is pretty good. My only complaints are that the credits looked a little blurry and occasionally a vertical line would appear in the film. This is very noticeable when it appears but only lasts for a short time.

The sound isn't mixed too well at times. It sounds like some of the sound effects are a little low. I started watching the movie with the Cantonese soundtrack but switched midway to the Mandarin. Both of them are a little less than perfectly dubbed.

The subtitles sometimes appear too quick or lag behind for a second. It isn't too distracting although definitely noticeable.

FONG SAI YUK starts as a lighthearted Kung-Fu movie and then hits a point where it slaps you and says it just isn't going to play around anymore. That what I liked about this movie. The DVD is about average. The picture flaws are due to the film print and the sound could have been mixed better so keep this in mind before buying.
