HE'S A WOMAN, SHE'S A MAN, is an endearing comedy about a famous producer, Sam Koo (Leslie Cheung) who wants to create the next big male singer sensation. He has already helped skyrocket the singing career of his girlfriend Rose (Carina Lau). He holds a huge audition looking for the perfect "common" person to fulfill the role. Upon hearing of the audition, one of his woman fans (Anita Yuen) masquerades as a male and wins the audition. This causes friction in Sam's relationship with Rose when he falls for Wing and questions his own sexuality.

The picture quality is just about average. The transfer itself is fine. There is no signs of pixilation and I didn't see any artifacts. The print used is in fair condition. There is some noticeable dirt at times but it's not overly distracting. The picture is acceptable and definitely watchable. The subtitles are in the film print so you can watch this on a wide screen TV and see the subtitles.

The audio is also acceptable. All the sound comes from the front speakers. The soundtrack is pretty clear but a pop can be heard once or twice during the second half of the movie. This isn't too distracting and won't keep you from enjoying the movie. In fact, the sound is actually good through practically all the film.

While the picture and sound are about average, the subtitles are just about readable sometimes. As mentioned before, they are burned in the picture. They sometimes trail off the screen or appear over light backgrounds that make them hard to read. This was a little distracting. The spelling was sometimes a little off but when you could read the subtitles, they weren't too distracting.

This a no-frills DVD. Theren't really any extras to speak of other than a summary that isn't in English. It's a very straight forward presentation of the movie.

If you are a fan of this movie, you should really get this DVD. If you haven't seen this movie, I would definitely suggest renting it if possible. It's a good comedy that translates well. The performances are also very good. Leslie Cheung is great in his role. The subtitles aren't perfect but they aren't so bad as to ruin the movie.
