Jet Li Stars as Hung Hei Kwun, a man whose entire clan is killed with the exception of his son. Betrayed by practically everybody, he must go into hiding to plan his revenge. While on the run, Jet becomes a body guard so he can feed his son. His job mostly consists of keeping his employer's future wife from stealing from him. He soon learns that his enemy also wants to steal the treasure of Shaolin. The map to this treasure, is tattooed in parts on five children. Jet must protect these children and keep them out of his enemy's hands.

NEW LEGEND OF SHAOLIN is a fun movie. It's not for everybody but it is mostly action with a good dose of comedy. The fight scenes are good and Tze Miu steals the show as Hung Hei Kwun's son. My favorite part of the movie is when he and two other children do a no-shadow kick simultaneously on a bad guy. You may have also seen him in GOD OF GAMBLER'S RETURN and MY FATHER IS A HERO. The scenes of the father and son fighting are great.

This isn't Jet Li's best movie but it is very entertaining. Jet's character is very restrained in this one and is very different from his portrayal of Fong Sai Yuk or Wong Fei Hung. I wouldn't recommend this as your first Jet Li movie if you've never seen one.

The picture quality is pretty good. This movie has been released at least twice before and has always been flawed. This release gives a good source print with minor damage. The colors and black levels are also well done. I didn't notice any artifacts on my TV. The picture is better than many imports I have seen.

The sound is a 5.1 remix. I didn't notice the back speakers being used at all. The sound is mixed well, the dialogue is never overpowered by the music or sound effects. The sound is also in sync with what is being said. The sound, like the picture, is very good. It won't give your sound system a work out but it does the job.

The subtitles are easy to read and relatively free of major spelling and grammatical errors. The stay on the screen long enough to be read and are in sync with the dialogue. The subtitles do appear below the picture at time so you will want to keep this in mind if you have a widescreen TV.

The extras consist of trailers for TAI CHI MASTER, FONG SAI YUK, and HIGH RISK. I think it's funny that they have trailers but not one for the movie on the DVD. This is just a minor complaint.

I enjoyed NEW LEGEND OF SHAOLIN and if you are a fan of the movie, this DVD shouldn't disappoint you. There are some slow moments in the movie but overall I would recommend it. The kids are great in this movie and their characters are actually important to the story. If you are a fan of movies like HIGH RISK and GOD OF GAMBLER'S RETURN, the you will find that the comedy in NEW LEGEND OF SHAOLIN is a little more subtle.
