PORTLAND STREET BLUES is a spin-off of the Young and Dangerous series and follows the story of Sister Thirteen, who is brilliantly portrayed by Sandra NG. Most of the movie is a flashback that shows Sister Thirteen's rise amongst the Triads. Several of the characters from the Y&D series make cameo appearances, including Ekin Cheng.

The picture quality is excellent on a 27 inch screen. There's no sign of dirt or speckles on the print. The colors are done well and the darker scenes show no signs of getting muddy. On the 47 inch screen, the picture isn't so excellent. There are some artifacts and you can't zoom in on the picture to fill the widescreen because the subtitles are below the picture. In short, if you have a smaller TV, you won't have a problem and the picture will look good. On a large TV, you will find it just about watchable.

I watched the movie with the Cantonese soundtrack. The sound is Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. I only noticed a couple of times that the rear speakers were actually used but overall the mix was acceptable.

The subtitles were very easy to read although they weren't always translated well. They were understandable and even when they weren't perfect they were never distracting. They were always in sync with what was being said. The subtitles are on the bottom black bar so if you have a widescreen TV, they will be cut off if you use zoom mode.

The movie contains a trailer and Star's Files for Sandra NG, Kristy Yeung, and Shu Qi.

PORTLAND STREET BLUES is surprisingly good. If you like the movie, you'll love the DVD. The movie is 114 minutes but never gets boring. Sandra NG was nominated for a best actress award for her role and Kristy Yeung and Shu Qi received nominations for best supporting actress. As part of the Y&D universe, characters from the series appear briefly and don't distract from Sister 13's story.
