The RULES OF THE GAME is Triad revenge movie that tells the story of a woman named Ann who is sought after by a Triad boss, Shing. David, Ann's boyfriend isn't too happy about this. During a scuffle, Shing beats David and Ann's friend and leaves him paralyzed. David swears revenge for this. Due to Ann's brother using her as collateral for a debt, they must use Shing's help. David reluctantly joins Shing's gang but never forgets what has been done to his friend.

The picture looks very good on this DVD. The source print was very good that was used. There are no scratches in the film or signs of artifacts anywhere. Universe generally does a pretty good job when it comes to the picture.

The DVD has a Dolby Digital mono soundtrack. I watched it in Cantonese. The sound was very good. As usual, I prefer this over a 5.1 remix. The mixing was adequate, the dialogue was never drowned out by music or sound effects.

The subtitles were easy to read and translated reasonably well. They were in sync with what was said.

THE RULES OF THE GAME is a good movie if you like Triad revenge stories. There isn't any gun play in this movie. It's all done with machetes and fists. Sometimes when somebody needs to prove a point, a sledge hammer is used.

The look of the movie is very gritty and not as slick as some other recent films. I liked the movie but it seems like some of the characters aren't used as much as they could be. Some of Shing's gangsters are more interesting than he is.

The DVD quality is very good. If you are a fan of the movie I would recommend it.
