SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT stars Joyce Godenzi and Carina Lau as two cops, Mina and Ling. Mina marries Ling's brother, Yuen Wah (Tony Leung Ka-Fa), but is not liked by his family other than his mother. While trying to thwart a robbery from a Vietnamese gang, one of the members are killed and they plan revenge. Since the gang got away, Mina is told to fire Ling because she put the mission in jeopardy. When following up on a tip off, Yuen is killed. At the funeral, a bouquet is thrown on the coffin that is really a bomb and Mina is seriously injured. She finds out that she is pregnant and must have surgery but anesthesia might harm the baby. She agrees to an operation without anesthesia. When the operation is over, she is told she is off the case, as is her sister-in-law and family. During the night she sneaks out of the hospital set for revenge. She teams up with Ling, who gets information where the gang is, to bring them to justice.

SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT features some great action scenes although there are a couple of slow parts. The fights feature a lot of jumping around and equal parts guns and Kung-Fu. The fights are pretty brutal. Joyce Godenzi is great throughout the movie. Whether it's taking on a whole gang or one on one against Agnes Aurelio, she is a hero that never gives up, despite her own wounds. One fight involves Carinna Lau sporting two machetes against a bunch of gang members using very large monkey wrenches and other ship's tools.

The movie looks surprisingly good for its age. The colors aren't too vibrant but the print itself is in pretty good shape. There is very little damage and there are just a few specks in it. The transfer is also done well. Night scenes look very good. The video is on par with most other Hong Kong imports.

The audio is a 5.1 remix. I watched the movie with the Cantonese option. The soundtrack is mixed evenly. There is some use of the rear speakers for ambient sounds. Most noticeably is towards then end when Mina and Ling are on the boat. The audio, as with the video, is about average.

The subtitles have very few grammatical and spelling errors. They are also easy to read throughout the movie. They do appear on the image of the movie and not the black bars so if you have a widescreen TV they will not be cutoff.

The extras consist of the usual Star's Files and trailers for The Inspector Wears Skirts, To Be Number One and Tiger On Beat II.

SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT isn't exactly HARD BOILED with a female cast but it is a solid movie with some great action scenes. Joyce Godenzi and Carina Lau are excellent in this movie. Sammo Hung also has a cameo and is great to see. The biggest surprise is how funny the mother-in-law is, played by Dang Bik Wan. She plays it straight but she has some of the best non-fighting scenes in the movie. If you like the movie, you will be happy with the DVD. This movie is definitely worth a rental if you haven't seen it already.
