Ching Loong (Jackie Chan) and his brother Chen Keung (Wei Pei) are both orphans who are taken in by a highly regarded Kung Fu school. Cheng takes a bribe from a rival school to help them win the lion dance competition and leaves his own schools when he is found to be a traitor. To survive, he helps free a powerful Kung Fu Master from the authorities. Ching is mistaken for his brother and arrested. It is up to Ching to bring the outlaw master back to justice.

The YOUNG MASTER is a must for all Jackie Chan fans. It starts as a very serious old school style Kung Fu movie but gets lighter as the movie progresses. This is the second movie that Jackie Chan directed and it really is a milestone in his progression from the standard Kung Fu movie to his unique style mixing comedy with the action. The action is top notch. Yuen Baio and Jackie have some wonderful scenes together using a bench of all things to challenge each other. If you've ever watched JACKIE CHAN's MY STUNTS, you will notice he goes over some of the stunts from this movie.

The picture quality itself is very good for a movie of this age. There are some scenes with excessive grain but nothing that is overly distracting. There is some flickering in the image that happens occasionally. It is enough to notice but I did not find it excessive. The colors and detail are very good. There is one issue that knocks this down and that is that the framing of the image cuts off some of the information at the top. For a comparison between the Fox/Fortune Star release and Universe, please go here. The Fox version does have more information on the bottom of the screen. Fox and Fortune Star are aware of this and it is being looked into. If you have seen this movie already, the framing is much more obvious than if you haven't seen it before. It's a shame about the framing because the movie looks very good otherwise.

There are Dolby 5.1 and DTS Cantonese soundtracks. This does not have the original mono theatrical mix. Like the other Fox/Fortune Star releases, the surrounds are used for sound effects and ambiance sound. The mix is tastefully done and shouldn't bother those who prefer the original mono sound too much.

The subtitles are easy to read and do not contain any spelling or grammatical errors. They are well timed with the dialogue. They do appear to follow the English dub. I only watched certain parts of the movie with the English dub and the subtitles where identical in those scenes.

The only extras are trailers for this movie as well as previous Fox releases.

THE YOUNG MASTER is a great Jackie Chan film that is definitely worth a watch if you enjoy his movies and want to see one of his early attempts at directing. The framing issue might make you think twice about purchasing it but you may want to rent it first. As mentioned before, this is a known issue and it's being looked into. I will update this review when I get more information.
