SHANGHAI AFFAIRS stars Donnie Yen as a doctor, who along with his assistant, Bond, tends to the needs of a small village. When the town is threatened by the Ax Gang, led by Yu Rong Guang, Donnie and Bond step in to help. It turns out that Donnie's old friend, the head doctor at a major hospital, is corrupt and gives orders to the Ax Gang. The gang eases off on the villagers a bit but some still want revenge on Donnie and his pal. Donnie still finds it in his heart to cure the leader of the gang's sister of a knot in her throat. Donnie refuses to accept payment for this but asks a favor in return. The town's children are being kidnapped and killed and he asks Yu Rong Guang for assistance.

This movie is probably best suited for people who are major fans of Donnie Yen. The man has talent but this movie is just about average and has a predictable story line. Yu Rong Guang gives a good performance as the leader of the Ax Gang. I may have been expecting too much from this movie because it has the two main stars of IRON MONKEY. Some of the fights border on ridiculous because Donnie Yen just takes on too many guys by himself. He fights a hundred guys at once with just a stick. They have axes but he fends them off. It almost becomes boring watching the fights how they are filmed because Donnie is such a superman.

The The picture quality of the DVD is acceptable but not great. The print itself is in pretty good shape with very few specks and only shows some minor ware. The colors are also decent. The transfer is good but dark scenes get murky looking. This was viewed on the 47 inch screen so it will probably look a little better on something smaller.

The sound is mono and mixed well. The sound comes only from the front speakers. I watched the movie with the Cantonese soundtrack. The overall quality is about average with most imports DVD's.

The subtitles are burned in the print and are generally easy to read. There are a few times when the subtitles are off the sides of the screen. They do appear on the print of the film so if you have a widescreen TV you won't have to worry about them being cut off.

Extras consist of a trailer and a trailer for BALLISTIC KISS.

Bottom line, unless you are a big Donnie Yen fan, you may want to avoid this. The movie isn't horrible but it's bland. It is somewhat reminiscent of LEGEND OF THE WOLF. SHANGHAI AFFAIRS is worth a rental but definitely watch it before you consider buying it.
